DON’T JUST SHOW, TELL - TAKE YOUR ART TO A WHOLE OTHER LEVEL

Seeing your work online means people don’t get the chance to talk to you about your work, but reading your words is the next best thing.

Whether it’s in blog posts, social media captions or shop item pages, if you’re writing about your art in these spaces, you can take advantage of having the eyes of potential fans and allow them to read about your work straight from the horse’s mouth.

Be Understood

1. People Want To Understand Where Your Art Comes From

Believe it or not, your artwork doesn’t always speak for itself. At least not all on its own. Writing about your art, whether it’s in blog posts, social media captions or shop item pages, gives people the chance to learn about the art you create. Rather than just interpreting the art entirely for themselves, and possibly not gaining much by doing so, give them something to dive into. Put them in your shoes and your creative mind, and allow them to understand where the art really comes from and what it means.

Create Connection

2. People Will Be Able To Connect To Your Art

It’s likely that the people who really like your work will connect to it straight off the bat, as soon as they lay their eyes on it. But don’t underestimate how much deeper people can fall in love with your work once they learn more about it. This depth of connection is what turns fans into buyers, and buyers into long-term loyal collectors. The people who might not have resonated with your work straight away might likely develop a newfound appreciation for your work if given the chance to read about it.

Talk Better

3. Make You Better At Talking About Your Art

The more you write about your artwork, the more you give yourself the chance to articulate what you do. Finding the words to describe your creations might be something you struggle with, or maybe you often find yourself repeating the same things over and over. Putting pen to paper, or fingers to the keypad, gives you the chance to discover and explore new thoughts and ideas about your work and art practice, new ideas that you can then relay when discussing your art in person at fairs, art markets and events.

Communicate With Curators

4. Clearly Communicates To Curators What You’re About

Talking about your art, especially on your art website, isn’t just good for allowing potential buyers to connect deeper with you and your work. It’s also important because curators who you may want to work with want to know what you’re about. They are the ones who will advocate for you to be a part of important exhibitions and collections. Having a clear and accurate understanding of your work, your ethos, and your story based on what they’ve read about you will bolster your chances of being positively received. Words written by you, about your art, leaves little room for curators (and others who wish to represent you) to misinterpret you and your work.

Show Your Uniqueness

5. Gives Your Art Depth and Uniqueness

What lies beyond the brushstrokes? Behind every painting, collage or sculpture of yours is a story. There is a whole series of inspirations, moments and ideas that led up to the creation of every piece, and each one deserves to have something said about it, even if it is just one sentence. I’m sure every finished creation of yours feels like a child you’ve given birth to, each one with its own unique character and voice. Give voice to each artwork you’ve made and talk about it, wherever and in whichever way you can.

Art marketing is difficult. Finding the time to work on it is even harder.
